New Times requires new ways of dealing with increasing amounts of information, and new ways of transforming information into knowledge. Teachers necessarily play a key role in these processes. The promise of new times for learners is that technology may provide new pathways for successful learning.

Encouraging a novice teacher to use the Internet in primary school mathematics

This paper presents my journey working with a novice teacher to encourage him to use the Internet as a professional development tool and as a resource for teaching primary school mathematics. Drawing on classroom observations and interview data, I outline the professional development strategies I used and the novice teacher’s responses. Strategies explored in working with this novice teacher included: (1) e-mail communication; (2) organising educational websites into Blogs; (3) offering to create a classroom website or Blog as a collaborative project; (4) planning and designing mathematical investigation for a school term; (5) showing mathematical websites and working with students in the classroom using the Internet; (6) linking selected websites to the teacher’s mathematics teaching program; and (7) introducing the teacher to communication sites as a tool for teacher professional development. Although it seems that this teacher has developed only slowly in his use of the Internet, if at all, the findings are significant in underscoring the non-linear, interactive and contingent nature of authentic professional development.
